I need driving directions and a parking permit. See below at end of this page.
What is the repertoire list? See below.
Where do go when I come to institute? Registration check in for the regular student institute will occur in the music building lobby on Sunday, 7/22, from 3-5 pm. At that time your student will receive his or her class schedule and group assignments for the institute week. If you are staying in the dormitory, you will be given directions to the dormitory for check in at that facility, along with the meal cards. Dinner is available for those staying in the dormitory; otherwise, everyone will have dinner on their own. There will be a general meeting in Evans Auditorium at 6:30 p.m., where further basic institute information will be given and questions answered. At 7 p.m., the students will join together to play several of the more popular Suzuki repertoire with faculty members and teacher trainees comprising the orchestral accompaniment.
I can't come to the Sunday registration. What do I do? You may call the director (Paula Bird, 512-694-7687) on Sunday afternoon 7/22 between noon and 2:00 p.m. to find out the time of your first class on Monday, 7/23. However, you will have difficulty getting onto the campus on Monday morning without the parking permit that would have been given to you on Sunday at the registration. We recommend that everyone attend the general registration from 3-5 pm on Sunday, July 22, to avoid the parking issue.
Where can we park? Parking is always a problem at the university, even for students and faculty! This year the university is charging $5.75 for a parking permit ($11.50 for Book 1/ECC parking permits). Your registration should have included the cost of this parking permit. However, if you did not register for parking at the time of registration, you need to go to the university parking department to purchase a permit. The parking permit will allow you to park anywhere on campus except the red/silver/restricted zones. There are several gold zones on the south side of the music building. Turn right at the music building guardhouse, and follow the road up and around to find gold parking zones. For further information about parking areas, visit the university website: www.txstate.edu.
Does a parent need to accompany the student to the institute? The Suzuki Institute is designed as a family experience. Unless the student is part of the Teen Dorm program or age 13 or older, a parent or other responsible adult must accompany each student. Each student's registration admits an accompanying adult, free of charge, to all student activities during the week. A parent or guardian is expected to observe lessons and classes for students under age 13 and to supervise all students and children under age 13. There is no childcare at the institute.
What clothes should my child wear for recitals and the final concert? There is no specific concert dress code. Students are expected to wear nice dress clothes for recitals and final concerts.
How should my student prepare for institute? All students should bring their own music and be prepared to play a memorized, polished piece for their first master class lesson. Specific repertoire review lists for all instruments will be sent after a student's registraiton application is received and processed. Students must provide their own instrument, unless prior arrangements have been made. All instrument cases, covers, and any additional equipment such as tuners, benches, footstools, and stands must be labeled with the student's name.
Is it possible to rent an instrument rather than bring an instrument to institute? A limited number of violas and cellos may be available for rental to out-of-town teacher trainers/trainees and students on a first-come, first-served basis. Please contact Blackerby Violin Shop of Austin at 512.469.9343 (888-PLAYOUT) for information. A limited number of guitars may be avialable for rental, by making advance arrangements to rent an instrument from Mazak Music at grant@grandecom.net or calling 512.396.1663 or 512.396.664. Students are responsible for the cost of instrument rental and any applicable rental insurance.
What about damage to instruments? TSUSSI is not liable for any loss or damage caused to instruments or other equipment or property brought to the institute. All institute participants and visitors are responsible for providing their own equipment and instruments and insurance coverage adequate to protect the loss of or damage to these items.
What are the limits to student enrollment? Student enrollment is limited by facility and available space. Registration applications are processed and accepted in the order that they arrive. Early registration (before May 15th) is highly recommended. All applications must be accompanied by full payment. A separate Student Registration Form must be filled out for each student in the family and may be photocopied for additional student registrations. Confirmation of enrollment, repertoire lists, housing, and any other institute information will be sent by June 30th or upon receipt of registration. TSUSSI reserves the right to cancel any classes (including Teacher Training courses) if enrollment is insufficient to sustain the class. In this event, all payment for the cancelled classes will be refunded in full.
What is the repertoire list so my student can prepare?
Here is the suggested repertoire list for the 2007 TX State University Suzuki String Institute. Please be sure to have your student review the songs on this list to the most polished level that your student can. The institute faculty will draw from the pieces on this list for use during technique and repertoire group classes and will pick pieces from this list to feature on the final institute concert (Friday, 7/27/07, 7 p.m.).

I need driving directions to the university.
Driving Directions and Parking Permits: Here are the driving directions to Evans auditorium (and the parking garage), where we will hold our opening night general meeting and play in (7/23) and our final institute performance (7/28). The music building is directly across from the parking garage, on the corner of Sessom and LBJ drives. The university is charging $3 for 7-day parking permits. So, anyone who anticipates needing a parking permit must contact Paula E. Bird as soon as possible to order one to be available when you check in. More information (and map image) can be found on university website: www.txstate.edu; type “driving directions” in search box and look for Evans Auditorium on list.
